Crack Filling

Crack filling places a flexible treatment in eligible pavement cracks to reduce the entry of water and debris and help slow further deterioration. It is maintenance for individual cracks, not a structural repair.

Is this the right service?

Where crack filling fits

Crackfill helps prevent water leaking into the asphalt base causing further erosion. Once cracks appear, crackfill is a yearly maintenance focus.

Good candidates

  • Individual open cracks
  • Cracks that collect water or debris
  • Eligible cracks that need treatment before sealcoating

What it does not fix

  • Potholes
  • Sunken or moving pavement
  • Alligator cracking
  • Base failure or widespread structural damage

What to expect

A straightforward project process

The exact plan is based on the surface, access, weather, and the work included in your estimate.

Inspect

Review the cracks and separate eligible maintenance cracks from pavement failure that needs repair.

Clean

Prepare eligible cracks so the selected treatment can be installed.

Treat

Place a flexible crack-treatment material when pavement and weather conditions are suitable.

Review

Provide any traffic restrictions and identify areas that may need future monitoring.

Before the crew arrives

Simple preparation

  • Move vehicles and other obstacles away from the treatment area.
  • Keep the pavement accessible and free from watering before the scheduled work.
  • Follow any additional cleaning or access instructions from A.A. Sealcoat.

Access and timing

Reopening depends on the project

Crack treatment may reopen sooner than sealcoating, but the exact timing depends on the material, temperature, weather, and traffic. Follow the project-specific instructions.

Expected visible result

What you should see

Treated cracks remain visible as sealed lines. The goal is to reduce entry of water and debris, not to make cracks disappear or add structural strength.

Materials and method

Selected after inspection

A flexible, pavement-compatible crack-treatment material is selected for eligible cracks and site conditions.

View all asphalt maintenance FAQs
How do I know which asphalt service I need?

Faded, structurally sound asphalt may be a candidate for sealcoating. Individual open cracks may need crack treatment. Potholes, sunken areas, broken edges, or heavily cracked areas usually need patching first. A.A. Sealcoat will inspect the pavement and recommend the appropriate work.

Can every crack be filled?

No. Individual eligible cracks can often be treated, but widespread alligator cracking, sunken pavement, potholes, or base failure may require patching or a larger repair. Crack treatment does not add structural strength.

What happens if the weather changes?

Most asphalt maintenance requires a dry surface and suitable weather. Rain, temperature, or other site conditions may require the schedule to change. A.A. Sealcoat will confirm any adjustment with you.

How long will the area need to stay closed?

Closure time depends on the service, material, temperature, weather, and traffic. Sealed surfaces commonly need at least 24 hours before vehicle traffic, but always follow the reopening time provided for your project.

How is the estimate calculated?

Pricing depends on the size and condition of the paved area, preparation and repairs needed, access, materials, and the requested service. Schedule a free estimate for project-specific pricing.
